Lister-Jaguar In Depth
The Lister-Jaguar has always been one of my favorite road-racing specials. The hood isn’t as bulged as in the Lister-Chevy, and you can’t beat that pretty little Jaguar six.
Sebring Legends of Motorsport 2011
There were a lot of cars there I had not seen before at the 2011 Sebring Legends of Motorsport, and unlike many vintage events at Sebring that turn into a Porsche 911 tribute, there were a wide variety of types and classes. Hopefully they can keep up the momentum in coming years.
Jim Hall’s Chaparrals
Along with the Grand Sport Corvettes, the 2003 Amelia Island Concours featured the cars of Jim Hall. It was the first time all of these cars had been together outside of the museum in Midland, Texas. Interesting story, as I was looking at the cars with my family, an older gentleman came out with a folding chair and sat down next to one of the cars. I poked my wife, said, “I think that’s Jim Hall.” I went over and he kindly signed my program as well as the back cover off a model of a Chaparral 2 I brought with me just in case I had the opportunity. He’s a very nice guy, and told me his favorite car of the ones on display was the 2D.
Cobra Daytona Coupe
In 2009, a rare find at Amelia Island was this 1965 Cobra Daytona Coupe. Radically different than the Cobra roadsters, it had an ultra-slippery body designed by Pete Brock. This car is chassis CSX2601, driven by Bob Bondurant at the 12 Heures du Reims in France. I was fortunate to be there when the car was opened up to show off the big Ford engine.
Don Garlits Museum
A few photos of a visit to the Don Garlits museum in Ocala, Florida. There’s a wide variety of cars on display here, from the expected to dragsters and funny cars to Don’s personal collection of vintage American classics and Rod & Customs. It’s worth a visit if you’re ever in the area.
Grand Sport Corvettes In-Depth
In 2003, the Amelia Island Concours hosted all five of the original Grand Sport Corvettes – three coupes and two roadsters. It was a dreary day in Florida for this event, and it was raining so hard that they brought all of the cars into the ballrooms and parking garages of the hotel. The Corvettes were one set of highlighted vehicles; the other was the Chaparral cars of Jim Hall (more on those soon!). The Grand Sport has one of the prettiest engines in any race car, with the cross-ram Weber carbs sitting proudly atop the Chevy V-8.
